Nothing beats the real-world experience. Some experiences can be learned by reading about it, via simulation, and then applied in a real-world setting. The online courses provided here are intended for retention of concepts required for successful sailing.
It is important that you eventually follow along and apply these skills on a real boat or subject matter related to the course (I.e.: Line or rope for knot tying, running rigging, standing rigging, etc.). Some concepts may apply to a smaller boat, other concepts may apply to a larger boat. Running and standing rigging will vary by boat class. Generally, rigging design is similar, but NOT THE SAME. You choose your environment.
